Season 1 — Episode 1: The Girl in the Photograph
Ethan never believed in ghosts. He had always thought people invented ghost stories because they were afraid of things they couldn’t explain. That changed the night he moved into the apartment above the abandoned bookstore on Blackwood Street. The apartment was cheap, strangely quiet, and came with one unusual condition from the landlord: he was never supposed to enter the locked room at the end of the hallway. Ethan didn’t ask why. He simply moved his belongings inside and began his new life. For the first few days, everything seemed normal. Then, on the seventh night, he found an old photograph hidden beneath the floorboard beside his bed.
The photograph showed a young woman standing in front of the same apartment decades earlier. She had dark hair, a gentle smile, and eyes that seemed strangely familiar to Ethan. On the back was a handwritten name: Lily. Ethan placed the photograph on his desk and forgot about it until that night, when he woke to the sound of someone quietly humming in the hallway. He followed the sound and found the old bookstore door standing open even though he remembered locking it before going to bed. Inside, every shelf was covered in darkness except one. A single red book sat beneath a narrow beam of moonlight. Ethan pulled it from the shelf and discovered dozens of handwritten pages belonging to Lily.
The diary described her life in the apartment many years ago. She wrote about the bookstore, the strange dreams she had been experiencing, and a man she feared but could never escape. She also wrote about someone who had promised to save her. Ethan kept reading until he reached the final page, where Lily had written only one sentence: “If he comes back, tell Ethan I’m sorry.” Ethan stared at the name for several seconds. He had never met Lily. He had never heard of her before finding the photograph. Yet somehow, she had written his name decades before he was born.
That night, Ethan placed the diary beside his bed and tried to sleep. At exactly 2:13 AM, the room became freezing cold. The photograph on his desk slowly turned over by itself. Ethan sat up and saw Lily standing beside the window. She looked exactly like the woman in the photograph, except now she was transparent, pale, and covered in tiny drops of rain. Ethan couldn’t speak. Lily looked at him with tears in her eyes and slowly walked closer. She reached toward his face but stopped before touching him. Then she whispered something Ethan could barely hear. “You finally came back.”
Ethan felt a chill run through his body. He wanted to ask what she meant, but Lily suddenly disappeared. The room returned to normal, except for one thing. A new photograph had appeared on his desk. Ethan picked it up and nearly dropped it. It showed Lily standing outside the same apartment, but this time she wasn’t alone. Beside her stood a young man wearing an old-fashioned black coat. Ethan stared at the man’s face. The photograph was more than fifty years old, yet the man looked exactly like him.
Ethan couldn’t move. He turned the photograph over, hoping to find an explanation. There was only one sentence written on the back.
“We promised we’d find each other again.”
Ethan’s hands began to shake.
Then someone knocked on the bedroom door.
Three slow knocks.
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
The door slowly opened.
Lily stood there.
But she wasn’t looking at Ethan.
She was staring at the mirror behind him.
And in the reflection, Ethan saw something that Lily clearly couldn’t.
A second Ethan was standing directly behind her.
The second Ethan smiled.
Then he raised one finger to his lips.
“Don’t tell her who you really are.”
TO BE CONTINUED…
But the biggest mystery isn’t who Lily is.
It’s who Ethan was before he was born.
